We’ve Had Better Tuesdays
Tuesday was a rough day for district schools in the House and Senate education committees, with both committees hearing and passing bills that the association strongly opposes. Senate Education heard Sen. Kelly Townsend’s SB1011, which would prohibit school boards from paying dues to the association, while House Ed took up Rep. Michelle Udall’s HB2112, a reprise of the prohibited courses and subjects (i.e. “CRT”) language included in last year’s budget bills. That language was subsequently struck down, so it is back for another round. You can read more about it from AZ Education News here. Here is a roundup of Tuesday’s bill action:
HB 2025 schools; parental classroom visitation policies - FAILED 5-5
HB 2027 CTEDs; revisions- Passed as Amended 10-0
HB 2040 ESAs; special education services; notification passed 9-1
HB 2112 classroom instruction; race; ethnicity; sex passed 6-4
SB 1011 school board associations; membership; payment passed 5-3
SB 1068 charter schools; teachers; funding passed 5-3

Next Tuesday Is Looking Pretty Tense, Too
Agendas for next Tuesday’s committees promise more fireworks over some contentious issues in schools, with committees slated to hear bills banning sexually explicit materials in schools (HB2495), parental review of books in school libraries (HB2439), and more. The Senate is slated to take up partisan elections for school boards (SB1010).

Senate Takes Up Athletics Participation Bill Tomorrow
The Senate Judiciary Committee will take up SB1165 interscholastic; intramural athletics; biological sex (Barto) tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ASBA is opposing this bill because the rules for participation in athletics and the classification of competition for sports has always been handled by the leagues to which districts, charters, and private schools belong. We believe that they are more than capable of resolving these issues should they arise.
Pardon Our Dust
We here at ASBA GR are trying a new platform for the GR updates that both make it more easily shareable, automatically archives past editions, and also allow for some greater flexibility in list management. If you have feelings one way or the other, please let us know at advocacy@azsba.org.
